The rediscovery of American Beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.)

Winter. I’ve never much cared for the cold. The moisture from my hot breath is forming icicles on the scarf wrapped around my head as I persevere upslope. “It’s easy to scorn away the beauty of the world in such temperatures”, I say to myself, awaiting the warmth of an elevated heart rate and rushing circulation. Gardens.  Dazzling treasures of art. Libraries full with stories of bewildering challenges.  Monuments of history. Protectors of diversity.  Habitat for the endangered.  Medicine chests for the meek. Where sustenance is sustained. Where friends are made and lost, love proposed and declined, and where human and plant are destined to consume each other.  A garden is not just a garden.
